A Place to Live, Learn, and Dream: Mykolaiv Orphanage Project

A Place to Live, Learn, and Dream: Mykolaiv Orphanage Project
The children who live at the lyceum currently are predominantly orphans between ages 0-17, but also include children without parental care because of addiction issues.

The children include evacuees from other areas of Ukraine which are now unsafe to remain in, and some of the children have disabilities. The institution is a place for them to both live and learn on the same site.

The compound is north of Mykolaiv, out in the countryside and not easy to find unless you are searching for it, hence why it has not received much help from other NGO’s.

On site there are two children accommodation blocks, school blocks, a kitchen and canteen, a gymnasium, a basic medical facility, music rooms, art rooms, a psychologist, a laundry block and staff accommodation.

The orphanage is a government site and it does receive basic government funding to keep going. The funds it receives are allocated only to food, utilities and salaries of the staff. There is no additional funding to help with upkeep or luxury items.

It is a very welcoming place with excited and curious children. The garden is well taken care of and you can feel the warmth as you are walking around the compound. Due to the lack of fundings, the buildings are in urgent need of renovation. There are problems with mold in the buildings, roof is falling in, floor is cracking, no ventilation, poorly wiring for the modern society, several safety risks and not enough toilets and showers.

Project Stages

As we continue to transform the Lyceum into a safer and more nurturing environment for the children who call it home, several critical renovation projects are underway. These efforts are designed to address the pressing needs of the residential and educational facilities, ensuring the children have a secure and comfortable place to live and learn. From infrastructure upgrades to the restoration of essential amenities, here are the key improvements we are making to support the well-being and future of these resilient young residents.

Improvements include:

  • Replacing Floors, paint and new ceiling in residential building
  • Re-wiring of both residential buildings
  • Complete renovation of the five bathrooms in both residential buildings
  • Ventilation in both residential buildings
  • Restoration of two roofs – the over 12’s residential building, and one of the school buildings.
  • Replacing bedroom furniture in residential buildings
  • Re-vamping the basement bomb shelter
